1ST EPARATORY CONFERENCE OF OSCE ECONOMIC & ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM

The First Preparatory Conference of the 18th Economic & Environmental Forum of the Organization for Security & Co-operation in Europe continues today (13th October) in Astana.
The promotion of good governance at border-crossings, improving the security of land transportation and facilitating international transport by road and rail is the key topic of the two-day conference.

KAZAKHSTAN JOINS CLUB OF COUNTRIES WITH HIGH HDI

Kazakhstan has joined the club of countries with a High Human Development Index (HDI) says a report published by the United Nations Development Programme on October 5th.
With an HDI of 0,804, Kazakhstan is placed 82nd out of the 182 countries ranked. Kazakhstan’s HDI grew steadily during the last 14 years at an average of 0.2% per annum.

KAZAKHSTAN: RECORD GRAIN HARVEST

Kazakhstan has reported a record grain harvest this year. 22 million tons were collected – making 2009 the second best harvest in the last five years (in 2007, 22.3 million tons of grain were collected).
This year also saw the planted area under grain crops in Kazakhstan increase to 17.2 million hectares (14.7 million hectares under wheat) - 1 million hectares more than last year.

KAZAKHSTAN ANNOUNCES ESTIMATED OIL PRODUCTION OUTPUT FOR 2009

This year Kazakhstan expects oil production output to increase by five million tons against 2008. The announcement was made by the country’s Vice Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources Lyazzat Kiinov at the opening of the KIOGE-2009 International Oil & Gas Exhibition in Almaty.
According to Mr. Kiinov, oil production output in the central Asian Republic has been rising year on year: “Last year we produced just over 70 million tons, this year we are expecting 75 million tons.”

KAZAKHSTAN'S RICH TOURISM POTENTIAL TO BE DEVELOPED

President Nursultan Nazarbayev touted Kazakhstan’s potential as a tourist destination in a speech at the opening ceremony yesterday (Oct. 5) of the 18th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Astana.
“Today tourism accounts for 10% of world GDP and employs around 250 million people. The global income from tourism amounts to USD 4 trillion. So tourism is one of the world economic engines. Kazakhstan's potential is rich and various.

KAZAKHSTAN, AZERBAIJAN SIGN ACCORDS THAT WILL IMPACT ON EUROPE

President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan met in Baku on October 2 and agreed to expand bilateral relations in ways that may have an important impact on European and world energy supplies.
The two presidents oversaw signing of a number of important accords.

KAZAKHSTAN TO BAN PUBLIC SMOKING & RAISE DRINKING AGE

Kazakhstan's Government will impose a total ban on smoking in public places and raise the drinking age from 18 to 21 - a rare step in the hard-drinking, heavy-smoking former Soviet space.
Kazakhstan’s Health Ministry spokesperson Agmagul Abenova said, "We are now following the recommendations of the World Health Organization, according to whose data more than 30,000 people die every year in Kazakhstan from smoking. We also continue to fight against alcoholism."

ISLAMIC FINANCE & BANKING ARRIVES IN KAZAKHSTAN

Eight months after Kazakhstan's law on Islamic finance and banking was adopted, several international and local Islamic institutions have opened in Kazakhstan’s two main cities (principally in Almaty). Kazakhstan has started working with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to draft a roadmap on Islamic finance and economic development. This roadmap will form a central part of the IDB's strategy in Kazakhstan, and is expected to be announced in early 2010.

On September, 30th 2009 the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the State of Israel Mr. Galym Orazbakov met with the Minister of Agriculture and rural development of the State of Israel Mr. Shalom Simhon. During the meeting the parties discussed the issues of activization of the process of forming of the Kazakhstan-Israel bilateral fund in the field of agrarian researches, which was initiated during the recent visit to Kazakhstan of the President of Israel Mr. Shimon Peres.
