KAZAKHSTAN BACKS STEPS PROPOSED BY OBAMA AGAINST NUCLEAR THREAT

At the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty [CTBT] at the UN HQ in New York yesterday, Kazakh Secretary-of-State and Minister of Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev said that Kazakhstan supports the intention of US President Barack Obama to enhance the process. “Being the country that closed the fourth biggest nuclear tests site and abandoned the fourth biggest nuclear-missile arsenal, Kazakhstan has the right to state the necessity of further measures on reduction of the nuclear threat.”

IV EURASIAN ENERGY FORUM OPENS IN ASTANA

At the opening of the IV Eurasian Energy Forum in Astana today, Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov highlighted the successes of Kazakhstan in the oil and gas sector and emphasized that Kazakhstan had proved itself a reliable supplier of hydrocarbons to global markets. “The Government of Kazakhstan has been consistently developing private-public partnership in the O&G sector” said Mr Massimov.

KAZAKHSTAN PRESIDENT SPEAKS OUT AGAINST CORRUPTION

Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev delivered a powerful message on September 16 affirming his country's commitment to fighting corruption. He spoke at the opening of an international conference dedicated to the fight against corruption in Astana. The President reminded conference attendees - nearly 60 States and 20 international organizations represented - that Kazakhstan was the first CIS country to adopt a special law ‘On the Struggle against Corruption’.

KAZAKHSTAN & ADB AGREE $500 MILLION LOAN

Kazakhstan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a lending agreement September 14 as part of the anti-crisis programme to support ADB member states. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Finance Bolat Zhamishev and Stephen Wermert, Country Director of the ADB Kazakhstan signed the agreement. According to the agreement, ADB will extend Kazakhstan a loan of USD 500 million for a five-year term, including a three-year grace period for the principal repayment.

PRESIDENT NAZARBAYEV SPEAKS ON ENERGY ISSUES AT THE 6TH KAZAKH-RUSSIAN FORUM ON INTER-REGIONAL COOPERATION

President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan summarized main issues regarding energy cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia at the 6th Kazakh-Russian Forum on Inter-regional Cooperation. The President announced that the Caspian Pipeline Consortium pipeline extension project could be approved by the end of this year.
